Q:What's your usual process for laying down color with gouache? I've been experimenting with it and it's a tricky beast...I try using it like oils, laying down thick color on top of thin washes, working from light to dark like in watercolor, but I still have problems with lights bleeding up into darks and dulling them.

Gouache can be very difficult as the colors tend to dry darker and its difficult to lay down opaque color on top of a color that is already there. I would suggest trying to make sure all of the layers are TOTALLY dry before laying down a new color to keep them from bleeding. I usually have to layer a few layers if I’m using opaque white or skin tone.
